Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of three U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to treat opioid use disorder. These three medications are buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. MAT is associated with multiple positive outcomes, including less risk of overdose death when reentering the community, reduced illicit drug use, and increased treatment engagement during and after custody. Moreover, research shows lower rates of criminal activity among individuals who continue treatment.
