Identify Champions

Trusted messengers are critical to gaining and maintaining support for programs and policies that can help address SUD that may sometimes be met with hesitancy from stakeholders. By identifying a champion or champions—individuals who are respected by the field and who are willing to be vocal about the need for and their support of SUD treatment, encourage the use of nonstigmatizing language, and challenge stigma—criminal justice agencies can strengthen company and community support for their efforts. Stakeholders tend to relate better and listen more to those who are similarly situated, so agencies are encouraged to find a law enforcement champion to speak to law enforcement, a judicial champion to speak to judges, etc. Similarly, champions can be agency leaders or line staff members; a judge can certainly set the tone for their courtroom and staff, but a line officer in the police department can also impact changes in fellow officers’ mindsets and treatment of individuals with SUD.
