Substance use and mental health disorders can make daily activities difficult and impair a person’s ability to work, interact with family, and fulfill other major life functions. Prevention and intervention strategies can reduce the impact of substance use and mental health disorders in America’s communities by reinforcing healthy behavior and lifestyles. Effective prevention programs must encompass services for children, youth, and families impacted by substance use. In addition, interventions in the community—such as crisis hotlines, mobile crisis teams, peer responders, and programs with fire and emergency medical services departments—deflect individuals with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders to treatment programs away from the criminal justice system.
