Morgan Thompson is Chief Executive Officer of Prevention Links in Union County, New Jersey, a nonprofit organization that leverages available resources to eliminate the deleterious effects of drugs, alcohol, and violence in communities statewide. Through the implementation of training programs and evidence-based strategies, Prevention Links focuses on identifying and enhancing existing strengths at individual, family, school, and work levels in order to serve as a resource for the sustainable revitalization of all types of community. Among its programs, Prevention Links provides individualized support services in which peer mentors in stable recovery assist people at any stage of recovery to meet basic needs such as secure housing, health care, and food security. “Not that long ago here in New Jersey, there weren’t really any peer recovery support programs,” Morgan says. “What our organization has been working to do is build up that recovery capital in our service area, with each new program we’re able to offer, with each peer recovery specialist we train. Even though not every single person who is impacted by addiction knows we’re here yet, that number of people who do know we’re here grows exponentially, week by week.”
