A Multi-level Intervention to Reduce the Stigma of Substance Use and Criminal Involvement: A Pilot Feasibility Trial Protocol

This article examines a multi-level intervention called Combatting Stigma to Aid Reentry and Recovery (CSTARR) targeting the intersection of stigmas among criminal legal staff and justice-involved individuals.

Stigma involves several interacting levels that create significant barriers to receiving evidence-based substance use treatment in the criminal legal system. This stigma in the criminal legal system often leads individuals to disengage from treatment, withdraw from their communities, and have negative health complications. This study is the first to examine a multi-level stigma intervention targeting the intersection of stigma among criminal legal staff and legally involved clients. Understanding best practices for reducing stigma among people with substance use disorder who are involved in the criminal justice system are essential.
