Strategies to Address the Opioid Crisis Across the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM)

The SIM model reflects the understanding that persons with behavioral health needs enter and proceed through the criminal justice system in fairly predictable ways and that there are six functional junctures—or intercepts—that provide opportunities for treatment, diversion, engagement with community resources, and reduction of further penetration into the criminal justice system. This session highlights the work of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Gather, Assess, Integrate, Network, and Stimulate (GAINS) Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation in helping communities address the opioid crisis through the SIM framework.
