Syringe Services Programs

Syringe services programs (SSPs) are an effective harm reduction strategy in not only reducing injection drug use but also the rates of bloodborne diseases that can be transmitted by sharing needles. In addition, comprehensive SSPs include treatment resources, screenings, peer support services, medical care, mental health services, educational materials, and other support services. This fact sheet provides a background of SSPs, a description of a comprehensive SSP, benefits of SSPs, and challenges to implementing this harm reduction method.
